He was a resident of Manitowoc County when he was drafted on 24 Nov 1942, two days before Thanksgiving that year; and entered service on 7 Dec 1942. He was married and had worked in furniture manufacturing. He was a Private First Class when he was captured by enemy forces in Holland on 19 Sep 1944, presumably during Operation Market Garden. He was held at Stalag VII-A in Moosburg, Bavaria. The camp was liberated by US forces on 29 Apr 1945. He was honorably discharged on 1 Oct 1945.

His year of birth was recorded as 1914 by the military, but all other sources show it to be 1913.RALPH T. MEYER

Ralph T. Meyer, age 92, formerly of Kiel and a resident of Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein died Monday evening.

He was born November 13, 1913 in the town of Centerville, son of the late Charles R. & Mary V. Schneider Meyer. He was a graduate of SS Peter & Paul Grade School.

On June 30, 1942 he married Sylvia R. Schwoerer at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. She preceded him in death after 56 years of marriage on December 1, 1998.

On December 7, 1942 he was drafted into the Army. Ralph was a member of the 101st airborne 327th Glider Infantry Regiment. In September of 1943 he embarked to England for advanced training. He landed in France as part of the Normandy Invasion. He received 3 Bronze Stars for battles he fought in. On September 19, 1944 as part of the Market Garden Operation in Holland the glider that he was in was hit by enemy fire. The pilot was killed causing the glider to crash into a tree. Injured from the crash, he was captured by German soldiers and transported in a railroad box car to Moosburg, Germany (Stalig 7-A). He was liberated from the prison camp on April 30th, 1945. On October 1st, 1945, after attaining the rank of Corporal he was discharged from Camp McCoy.

Ralph worked for AA Laun Furniture Factory, Kiel in the finishing department for over 40 years.

He was a member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Kiel and a former member of the church choir. He was also a charter member of the Kiel VFW Post 6707 and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Ralph was an avid Cubs & Packer fan.

Survivors include his children, and one son-in-law. He is further survived by 14 grandchildren & one step-grandchild. Survivors also include two sisters, two brothers, two brothers-in-law, & a sister-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, Brenda Schweitzer, one brother, Henry Meyer, four sisters, Florence Seichter, Sr. Alice Meyer, Gertie Muehlbauer, Romilda Stemper, one grandson, Jacob Shackleton and one great grandson, Samuel Kraus.

Entombment will take place in Knollwood Mausoleum, Town of Kossuth.
