Entered Civil War service as a private in 1861 and discharged in 1866. Fought at Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Chickamauga and Nashville. Promoted to Sergeant after Missionary Ridge. Homesteaded several times in Kansas in Nemaha County, Barton County and Mitchell County before coming to Oregon in 1890's. Settled in Yamhill County but retired from farming and moved to Portland with his daughter Jennie Hadley at 2419 SE Salmon Street where he died. Joshua's and Susan's grandson, Fauss Hadley, is buried next to them. (See also Lieut. William S. Newbury and Henry H. Pierce, who are buried in Lone Fir Cemetery and were soldiers in the 8th Kansas Volunteer Infantry as well.)
