Davenport - A memorial service for Emil Michael Stimac, M.D., of Davenport, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Davenport. The family will greet friends at the Church from 10 a.m. until the service begins. A private burial with military honors will be held Friday, May 1, at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery. Dr. Stimac died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Iowa Masonic Health Care Facility in Bettendorf. Cunnick-Collins Mortuary and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dr. Stimac was born May 2, 1917, in Virginia, Minnesota, the son of Michael and Rose Stimac. He graduated from Virginia High School in 1935, Virginia Junior College in 1937, the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology with a degree in chemistry in 1940, and earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota in 1945, where he was a member of Phi Rho Sigma fraternity. He served his internship at Highland Park Hospital in Highland Park, Michigan. He married June Rideout on August 28, 1945, in Faribault, Minnesota. Dr. Stimac was placed on active duty in the U.S. Army Medical Corps until 1948, stationed at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver and Camp Stoneman, California, and was discharged as a captain. He began his private medical practice in Princeton, Iowa, while serving as head of the Medical Department at the Rock Island Arsenal. Shortly thereafter, he moved his practice to Davenport, later serving as Medical Director at ALCOA for 20 years in addition to his private practice. Dr. Stimac was a longtime member of the Scott County Medical Society.

Dr. Stimac loved gardening, and he and June enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing, bridge, music, and watching sports together.
Dr. Stimac is survived by sons, Michael Ross Stimac, of Cupertino, California, and Dr. Gary (Susie) Stimac, of Issaquah, Washington; daughters, Nancy (Richard) Streufert, of Eureka, California, and Vicki (John) Stickney, of Athens, Georgia; grandsons, Davis Stickney, James Stickney, and Andrew (Amy) Stimac; and great-granddaughter, Emily Anne Stimac, and great-grandson, Benjamin John Stimac.
