"Knotts was born Dec. 8, 1895, in Jacksonville, Ore., to Belle and Clarence Knotts and he spent the early part of his life in eastern Oregon on the family homestead. In 1912, he moved to Sacramento where he graduated from Sacramento High School. He attended Stanford University in 1915 and 1916 and ultimately received his teaching credential from Chico Normal School and Chico State Teachers College.
"He was an elementary school principal in Sacramento and Fresno County and later a rural school supervisor near Santa Cruz. After that, he worked in the Santa Cruz city schools system. He retired in 1956 and returned to Chico in 1957.
"He was a life member of the Chico Elks Lodge No. 123; a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Santa Cruz, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Chico and a past president of a Santa Cruz Kiwanis Club.
"Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Frieda; a son, Allan of Chico; a daughter, Gloria McGoran of Corte Madera; three sisters, Bessie Robinson and Marian Herford, both of Sacramento, and Opal Erwin of Larkspur; and a grandchild.
"The Rev. Leonard Brown of Chico will officiate the service. Interment will be in the Chico Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Brusie Funeral Home."
