W. L. Rogers notes regarding his father: "Alfred Rogers lived a widower many years after the death of his first wife in April 1875. From that time on until his second marriage, his children were without the care and influence of a mother which was a loss difficult to estimate." Without a mother's guidance and counsel, his children had a difficult position in the social community.
"The Alfred Rogers farm bounded the village of St. John's on the west, fronting north on the Wapakoneta Road and abutting Ashburn Road on the west. Alfred Rogers lived on this farm and reared his family. Shortly before his death he sold his farm and moved to St. Johns."
