Chief chemist and eventually general manager of Solvay Process. He represented the United States at the conference of applied science in Berlin and through his connection with the Solvay company, represented the Belgian government in the chemical display at the Columbian exposition, at Chicago in 1893. He was also involved in the formation of Allied Chemical and Dye Company and was the first president of Solvay Bank.
