WILLIAM HENRY CRIBB

The oldest man in the La Plata community, William Henry Cribb, died Tuesday, January 16, 1958 at 11:40 a.m. at the age of ninety-five. He had been hospitalized since a heart attack on December 14, 1957 and had been at Stickler Hospital for the past few weeks.

Mr. Cribb was born in Somersetshire, England April 21, 1862.

When he was twenty-two he married Bessie Hawkins of Devonshire, England.

There was a lot of excitement in England at that time about opportunities abounding in the United States. Mr. Cribb had an uncle in the United States in Illinois, and in 1886 he and his wife and small daughter, Edith, bought passage on a boat to this country.

Mr. Cribb began life in America as a farm laborer in Illinois that year. He then became a tenant farmer, worked hard, saved his money, and seventeen years later was able to buy 160 acres of land near La Plata, the farm that Lloyd Slaughter is now on. He had lived for 48 years on the farm on which he resided southwest of town.

Ten children were born to the couple, six boys and four girls; the eldest, Edith, was born in England. One child died in infancy; one son, Ed, at the age of sixteen, and Edith, who lived with her parents, until her death, March 29, 1953.

Surviving arae five sons, Arthur, Frank and Fred of La Plata, Harry of the home and Ernest of Peoria, Illinois; two daughters, Mrs. Tom (Emily) Garnett and Mrs. Roy (Lizzie) Chadwell of Novelty. Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cribb became a member of the Church of England early in life.

He was a well-known member of this area through his work in agriculture. During the past few years he has enjoyed the title of the oldest man in this community, a title now taken over by Alex Walker, just three months Mr. Cribb's junior.

Funeral services were at the Presbyterian Church Saturday at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Clyde Miller and Rev. Fred L. Hudson.

Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery under the direction of Christie Funeral Home.
