In the death of Mrs Abraham Varick at Poughkeepsie last Sunday, New Paltz loses one of its best friends.
Herself descended from the Huguenot founders of New Paltz, Mrs Varick married a representative of one of the old Dutch families of Dutchess County, and in spite of her advanced age took the greatest interest in all pertaining to the old histories and tradition. Only a short time before she died she gave a piece of land in New Paltz village as a public park and play ground, which had come to her in direct line from Jean Hasbrouck, the Patentee.
Mrs. Varick will be mourned by a wide circle of friends who admired and loved her. She was what used to be called an "old fashioned gentlewoman," a type very rarely found in these days.
Mrs Varick is survived by her nephew, Hasbrouck Innis, who is well known in New Paltz, by a nephew and niece in Ogdensburg and by a niece in Poughkeepsie.
