"Mr. Jeremiah Brittain - Oxford, NJ, Jan. 26, 1822

Dear Brother:
After our respects we would inform you that we are all in health at present hoping these may find you all in the same. We have expected to have saw a letter from you since you was here. I believe you promised to write to us and I thought you considered yourself a man of your word. Now dear friend, we will still expect you to write. Betsy thinks very hard that you do not. She complains that you neglect us in that way and says you promised to write a lengthy letter which we have waited for untill the present time. We now take this favorable opportunity of writing by friend James McFerran, he informed us that he had been at your house not long since and that you have now your health very well and that your family is in health which gave us much satisfaction indeed. Your brother William and his family is well & said this day that he would write to you which no doubt he we will per friend James. Nelly and all the Hutchison family ? Poor Nelly wishes to hear from you and you aught to write to her. She wishes you will and cannot help that the matter between you and them ended in the way that it did. I don't know how they are getting along with there affairs. But Carey pushed the matter into a judge & execution and some arrangement took place by the interfearance of Billy's father-in-law. But how they will get the money I don't know - poor James. I pity him - he is an honest hardworking man and had been very unwell this last fall but has got better - we have obtained a new agreement with the Morristown Men which we hope will be useful - we will know more about it how it will turnout after a while. The man who killed his wife over the Mountain last winter was hung yesterday - and it is said that is was a very solemn scene. Molly Ayers (d/o Nathaniel Brittin) wife of Moses Ayers had her arm broke a few days ago by an accidental over sett of the sleigh -going down the road from Richman town - Please to write something to us. We are with due respect your friends. James and Elizabeth Davison

Mr. Jeremiah Brittain;

Dear Brother,

...There is one thing which my wife and son Robert is very desirous to know which is supposed you can inform us about the best of anybody in our connections which is respecting the situation of the Land of our deceased Father in the state of Virginia. We want to know whether you have heard anything about it within a long time. We suppose it has been settled upon by somebody long before this time. We want to know whether it has been sold for Direct Tax or any other kind of taxes. And as you are interested in it and live so much nearer to it than any of the others concerned in it, we thought you could give us some information....Brother William Brittain & his family is all well except for his wife, and she is very poorly...James Hutchison & Nellie (Eleanor Brittain, sister of Jeremiah) and their family is well and lives near Oxford Meeting House and James attends the gristmill...Sally Bowman was to see us this winter and was well, her husband John Bowman is said to be getting Ritch. You are said to be getting Ritch...My wife further desires you to inform us if you know that your father's Deed for that Land is recorded. And where it is recorded. An whether you think there could be anything done that would be useful for the heirs of your father if some suitable person could attend to it.

These from your Friends with due Respect, James and Elizabeth Davison

It is a long time since I have heard or seen any account from you either by line or otherwise which makes me conclude that perhaps you have not received any of my letters for a long time though I think you would have written something to some of us if you are living. I will therefore go back again a little more than a year to a time which occasioned much sorrow among us. It was the time of the last long illness of my dear companion on the morning of the 2 of Nov (1830) last she departed this life. After a lingering illness and much bodily pain & distress untill she was reduced to a mere skeleton. But we hope and think we have reason to believe she was prepared for the great change. We miss her company very greatly but hope that our loss is her everlasting gain. I will also mention again of the death of our Eldest daughter Elenor that too was a verry sorrowfull event in our family. Our son Robert is married & his wife had one Child and they call it Elizabeth for both its Grandmothers. (Poor James & Nelly is poor) they have had a great dale of baad luck & sickness. there family is growing up finely there Eldest son & daughter is both married. the daughter verry well. Peter Middagh & his wife & sisters is all dead. Death has taken many of our friends & acquaintence away with but a short time past. The great pint for each one is to be ready.
