Walter J. Miller, 95, of LaCrosse, WI, died Sunday, December 7, 2008 at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in Onalaska, WI. Walter was born on July 13, 1913 in South Dakota to Michael and Katherine (Stern) Miller. In May of 1936, Walter married Lovern Cronk in South Dakota. Walter was a horse rancher and owned a small horse ranch. He trained horses for 5 years and drove truck. Together they moved to Minneapolis and lived there for many years. Walter worked at Lutheran Friends Society delivering mail and was in charge of maintenance. He retired in 1975 and moved back to South Dakota to redue their house they retired in. In 1992 they moved to Isanti, MN and later moved in with their daughter before she passed away. Walter and Lovern moved to LaCrosse, WI in December 2005 to Willows Assisted Living. In December 2007 they moved to Springbook Assisted Living and on May 2, 2008, Walter was admitted into Bethany Care Center. Walter enjoyed horses, collecting antiques and coins, fishing, gardening, playing cards, and hand crafted farm buildings and wagons. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in LaCrosse, WI. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Lovern of LaCrosse, WI; son Dwaine (Claire) Miller of of LaCrescent, MN; son-in-law Jack Shuster of Isanti, MN; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Bernice Miller of Jamestown, ND. Walter is preceded in death by his parents, infant son Stanley, daughter Dawn in 2005, grandson Brain in 2000, five brothers, and eight sisters. The Funeral Service for Walter will be held on Friday, December 12, 2008 at 11:00AM at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Services - Hansen Goodview Chapel with the Reverend Greg Hovland officiating. Burial will be held on Sunday at 2:00pm at East Bradford Cemetery in Isanti, MN. Friends may call from 10-11AM on Friday at the funeral home.
