George Dyer Gravely was born in the fall of 1823 to Lewis Gravely and Rachel Martha Dyer. George was the namesake of Rachel Martha Dyer's father, George Dyer, a Lt in the Continental Line of the American Revolution. At the age of 30, he married his first cousin, Miss Letitia Gravely. He was a lawyer and served as Clerk of the Henry County Court for two five-year terms (1864-1869 and 1870-1875). His law firm, George D. Gravely and son, included his partner and son George L. Gravely. Other children from the union of George and Letitia Gravely included a professor and a physician. George was 81 at the time of his death.
