Leary Spencer ‘‘Smokey'' Appleby, 83, passed away Nov. 20, 2002, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Born in El Paso, Texas, he was the only son of the late Hewitt George Appleby and Edith Richardson Appleby Lepker and a longtime resident of Franklin. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II in both the European and Pacific theatres and the Korean War. With 22 years of military service, he retired as a petty officer first class and also retired from Union Camp Corporation. Smokey was a member of American Legion Post 73, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the YMCA Twinges and Hinges Swimming Class. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Betty Condrey Appleby; a daughter, Linda Appleby Williams and her husband, Lee, of Chesapeake; a son, Andrew Spencer Appleby of Franklin; stepdaughter, Amy Begin Hayner and her husband, Fred, of Sussex; grandchildren, Courtney Ann Williams, Rebecca Lee Williams and step-granddaughters, Jessica Hayner Tillett and Emma Jean Hayner; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife of 37 years, Ann Rose Appleby.
