A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County October 24, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 7 as a private with Co. E, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
He married Catherine Grim and fathered Samuel (b. @1869), Sarah Ann (b. 06/16/71 - married a Downs), Idella (b. 04/21/75 - married Jacob Clayton Gable), Henry G. "Harry" (b. 10/21/77), Irene E.
