[WILLIAM MADISON LaFON, (D), of Union, was born March 20, 1888, at Waiteville, Monroe County, son of Sylvester Seburg and Sena Ann (Williams) LaFon; educated in the public schools, at Montavista Seminary, Craig Healing Springs, Virginia, Delphian Seminary, New Castle, Virginia, Piedmont Business College, Lynchburg, Virginia, and Washington & Lee University, Lexington, graduating from the latter institution with the degree of LL. B.; member of Christian Church; has had several years experience in farming; bookkeeper for banks at Lynchburg and Roanoke; former school teacher; engaged in the practice of law at Union for several years; prosecuting attorney of Monroe County, 1917-21; elected to the House of Delegates from Monroe County in 1932, 1934 and 1936; elected to the Senate from the Tenth District in 1938; elected president of the Senate at the regular session of the Legislature in 1939.]
