MRS. KATE BATES

Kate Augusta Marshall, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Marshall, was born near Morrison, Illinois on April 8, 1865 and died July 23, 1951.

The Marshall family came to live in Chariton, Iowa in 1881 and Kate graduated from High School here in 1883. She was always active in church work and on April 10th, 1889 married Alfred Bates, a young Methodist minister, then preaching in Lacona, Iowa.

During the next twenty-one years, until the time of his death, her life was filled with the responsibilities of a minister's wife. Born of the marriage were two daughters and four sons, but two of the sons died at birth. After her husband's death, she and the children moved to Indianola, Iowa where the children continues their education and all graduated from Simpson College.

The oldest daughter, Ruth, gave her life to Christian service as a missionary and died in India at the age of twenty-eight. The three living children are Grace, a missionary in Budaun, India, Paul, living in Oak Park, Illinois, and Robert, living in Bound Brook, New Jersey. Also surviving is one brother, Robert B. Marshall, living in St. Joseph, Missouri.

As soon as the children had left, Mrs. Bates sold the home at Indianola and came back to Chariton, her girlhood home. With the exception of five years, when she lived with her sons, most of her time was spent in Chariton until 1945, at which time she entered the Methodist Sunset Home in Quincy, Illinois.

Mrs. Bates was a fine Christian woman and had many genuine friends wherever she went. Even in her later years she continued to sing the old hymns which had meant so much to her. Her brother, her daughter, two sons and their wives, and five grandchildren mourn the loss of one who gave so generously of love and care throughout her life. She fought the good fight and kept the faith.

Her general health had declined rather rapidly during the past year. The shock and complications from a recent fall contributed to her passing.

Services were conducted by the Rev. J. C. Clark, of the Derby Methodist church, at the Beardsley funeral home, Thursday, July 26, at 3 p.m. Interment was made in the Chariton cemetery.
