Thanks to Contributor Sandy Philpott for the following:

E. G. White and family and John and Will Crouch were preparing to go blackberrying. After they were all in the wagon ready to start, they found they had forgotten a shotgun they had intended to take. Mr. White returned to the house for the same. While putting the last charge of shot in Mr. White discovered he had put both charges in one barrel. He turned the gun up, emptying the shot into his hand, and as he went to let the gun to the floor again the hammer struck the lounge, causing the gun to discharge, taking effect in one side of his face, almost completely tearing it away [eliminated a section here as it was too descriptive]. Death was instantaneous and the soul of E. G. White passed over the river without one word or sign to his friends. The deceased was about 26 years of age, a kind father and good husband. He came here a few years ago from Wisconsin, where his parents now reside. He has taught school here several terms, but at present was engaged in farming out on Camas Swale [now the Sutherlin area]. He leaves a wife and two small children with a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. Last Sunday his remains were followed by a large number of friends to their last resting place in the Camas Swale cemetery.
