James R. Damrel was the son of John and Emmaline Blackwell Damrell. He was born in Tennessee and moved with his family to Arkansas.

He moved to Oklahoma and married Lizzie Mayes on May 8, 1908 in Afton, Oklahoma. They were the parents of 3 girls, Jessie, Ruby and Opal. James and Lizzie divorced some time before 1920, she was living with her brother in Arkansas in the 1920 census.

Marriage records revealed James Damrel and Georgia Bennett married on January 23, 1922 in Moore Co. Tennessee. After Georgia died in 1925, James married Maude I (LNU) before 1930.
