Civic leader, politician and newspaper editor. Held many positions during his life career, those being; Appointed United States Consul General to Montreal by President McKinley. Member of the Missouri State Legislature, twice sent as Republican delegate to Republican National Convention from Missouri years 1872 and 1896. Appointed Postmaster of St. Joseph by President Abraham Lincoln and newspaper editor/owner of St. Joseph Herald. It was written that Major John L. Bittenger had purchased all the stock of the St. Joseph Herald and assumed editorial charge of the paper. He was recognized as a fine newspaper man and no doubt greatly improved the Herald, making it what it should have been to represent a growing and prosperous city like St. Joseph. Source: Richmond Conservator June 20, 1889. He was married June 10, 1862 to Annie M. Smith.
