My Uncle Wilburn enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and was a sargent with the 444th. Bombardment Squadron, 320th. Bombardment Group. For Meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight as a radio gunner of a B-26 type aircraft. On 24 March 1945, while flying on a mission to bomb the Railroad bridge at Bietigheim, Germany. Sergent Pierce performed his duties with skill and expert teamwork enabling his plane to drop bombs in excellent concentration which severely damaged the bridge and rendered it impassable. Sargent Pierce's combat skills and devotion to duty have reflected great credit upon himself and the Unites States Army Air Force. Sargent Pierce is awarded the Air Medal Oak-Leaf Cluster. After the war, Uncle Wilborn and aunt Mattie lived in Louisville Ky. and Atlanta Georgia. He worked for Old Monarch Equiptment Company and and The Ford Motor company. He died at age 56 from a brain tumor.
