Mary was born in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland, but immigrated to Pennsylvania as a child, sometime before 1850. Her parents were Michael and Emma Hefferon. She married Andrew Moran in the early 1860s, and she had eight children, John Moran, Mary Moran Purcell, Andrew Moran, Anna Clare Moran Kerins, Joseph Moran, Alice Moran, Catherine Moran, and Emma Moran Kane. She lived most of her life in the vicinity of Pittston, Pennsylvania.
