Laura's parents owned a dance hall and butcher shop in Burlington, Wyoming, and they also lived in Burlington.

In 1912, Laura's family moved to Union, Oregon. In Union, Laura's father built a dance hall, gymnasium and opera house that was called the Yorgason Pavilion.

In 1917, Laura's family moved to a ranch near Bowmont, Idaho, called Lonesome Cove. Laura grew up in the Nampa, Idaho area, attending Nampa High School and later going to both Utah State and the University of Utah.

As a teen-age girl, Laura was coerced into running for Miss Nampa with a two-hour notice. She did in fact win the title of Miss Nampa. She was later runner-up in a very close contest for Miss Idaho.
