Eliza married John T. Wise, of Ohio, in 1866 on the heels of the Civil War. He was 21, and she was 18. The couple may have had two or three children together, but only Ulysses Eldorious Wise would live to adulthood. The couple parted, perhaps the grief of the lost babies made them irreconcilable. We find John Wise later married to Charlotte, while our Eliza married Henry Burgett in 1870 after the census taker had visited and found him home with his first wife and 4 children. Two of whom were Ada and Charlie C. Burgett. Mr. Burgett died in 1872, leaving Eliza a widow with her son Ulysses Eldorious Wise and his son, Charlie C. Burgett.
Andrew Jackson Guffey was just widowed and had young children at home. He married the strong and beautiful Eliza Forbes Wise Burgett, and they combined families and had children of their own. After the death of her match, her mate Andrew Guffey, Eliza followed the Forbes migration to California. She lived with her daughter Seddie Dell Brightwell and family in Selma, California (where Eliza was eventually buried), listed on the 1930 Census as Liza "Gubby" instead of Guffey.
She was known to all as Grandma Guffey, and folks would stop by and ask her opinion about things in their lives requiring a decision. Eliza died in Selma, California in 1932 at age 84. Not forgotten though! Her son crafted a gravestone, declaring her as the Mother of U.E. Wise. What a Wise man, to honor his mother so. She traveled from the Upper Midwest of Wisconsin where she was born, then across the heartland, and outlived two husbands, still cherished by her family and found rest. (by Carolyn Grice):
Still cherished in 2017 when her great great great granddaughter Crystal requests administration rights. Well done, Ms Crystal. I believe you are wise also. Happy Mother's Day.
4/14/18 - A still-living granddaughter, Neva Brightwell Patzkowski Williams (at 100 years old!) imparted that Eliza was always a sweet lady, and spent her twilight years living with her various offspring from time to time. When she came to live with my great-grandparents (Claude Brightwell and Seddie Guffey Brightwell), in Selma, California (where she is buried) she lived in a converted shed behind the house with a cook stove that she used. Unfortunately, that homestead is long gone.
