Virginia Lord Heard MacKethan , wife of the late Edwin Robeson MacKethan , died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at her home. She was 92.

Mrs. MacKethan was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Willis Heard of Savannah, Ga., and was a 1927 graduate of Vassar College. After teaching in Savannah and working in New York for several years, she was married and moved to Washington, D.C., in 1935.

In 1938, she and her husband came to Norfolk, where Mr. MacKethan joined the former National Bank of Commerce. During his career he served as president of the Trust Division of the American Bankers Association and was executive vice president-trust of then Virginia National Bank at the time of his retirement in 1972.

Mrs. MacKethan was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Junior League and The Colonial Dames. She was prominent in civic activities, including the Norfolk Forum, Friends of the Norfolk Public Library, Tidewater Interracial Council, United Nations Association, King's Daughters Children's Hospital, Girl Scouts, CARE (Citizens Against the Refinery), and numerous other organizations, serving on the boards of many.

Mrs. MacKethan is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Lord and Lee Coleman Kitchin of Norfolk; a son and daughter-in-law, Edwin Robeson and Elsie Hopton MacKethan of Grosse Point Farms, Mich.; a brother, Alexander Heard of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandsons, Lee Coleman Kitchin Jr., Alexander Heard Kitchin, Lewis Cameron Kitchin, Robeson MacKethan Kitchin, Edwin Robeson MacKethan IV, Philip Pack MacKethan ; and three great-grandsons.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Burial beforehand will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 201 St. Paul's Blvd., Norfolk, Va. 23510. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling arrangements.
