Mary Lochary, the eldest daughter of John and Catherine Lochary, was born in Maryland, USA (probably Harford County). She operated a very well known and up-scale Millinery Shop in downtown Baltimore even before her marriage to J. Robert Calwell.

She is listed, every year, in the City Directory for Baltimore, Maryland -- first as Miss Mary Lochary; next as Mrs. Mary Calwell; and finally as Mary Calwell, Widow of Robert. The second document that can be found is her monthly tax assessment on the women's hats her shop produced.

It seems her business not only made her a rather well-to-do businesswoman, but it also provided much-needed work and lodging (in her home per the Federal Census) for a number of females of the Lochary Clan in Maryland.

She also adopted Katie Whalan, and we're still looking for information on her. We're reasonably certain that she's the sister of Millard Whalen who was adopted by another cousin, John Staubitz. Information on this family is welcome, especially if it helps to clarify the relationships of this obviously close-knit family (almost all of whom are buried together in the Saint Ignatius Cemetery in Hickory, Harford, Maryland.

It's almost certain that she and Robert had no children, and he died what most would consider, 'earlier than usual,' leaving her both childless and the continuing head of a rather large extended family of Milliners and others who provided support for her family business.

I'd like to personally thank volunteer Donna Jones for her extensive work in this Cemetery, without whom, we wouldn't know as much as we currently do.
