William was the eldest son of the famous cellist Robert Lindley (1776-1855) and was himself a cellist of note. As a young man he performed in most of the major orchestras (usually alongside his father) and at most of the major musical events of that time.

in 1832 he married Elizabeth Sims, who was the daughter of a family in the rake-making business at Pamber in Hampshire, and they went on to have seven children.

In the late 1830s the family moved to Manchester and then - in the mid 1840s - to Salford, where he spent the rest of his life. William continued to perform with local orchestras and also tutored violin and cello.
