Matt Martin Sr. moved from South Carolina to Bourbon Co., Kentucky in 1805. In 1807, he and his brother, Barclay, together with Matt's son-in-law, Thomas Moseley, came to Tennessee on a prospecting tour.
The country appealed to them and in 1808, they moved their families thither.

Matthew Martin Sr. was buried in the Martin Cemetery located 2 1/2 miles from Fairfield, Tennessee. His tombstone reads as follows:
"Sacred to the Memory of Capt. Matt Martin, born 26 of December, 1763. At an early age of 16 years, He became a Soldier in the Defense of his Country during her struggle under Gen. Creene, in the Battle of Gilford and under Clark and Sumpter in many other Battles. He continued to discharge the duties of a Patriotic Soldier until the close of the War. He was a humane Master, a kind neighbor and unwavering friend. Tender and affectionate Father and devoted Husband. Died 16th of October 1816, in the esteem of all who knew him. Kind to his children, a friend made evidence in his last days, the Consoling reflections that their loss was
his infinite gain."
