Ruth Miller Nininger, of Roanoke, died Friday, April 1, 2005 at the age of 95. Ruth was born April 20, 1909 to the late Louis Virgil Miller and Susan J. Shull Miller, former residents of Bridgewater, Virginia.
She attended Bridgewater College as a member of the class of 1930. She married R. Douglas Nininger, June 6, 1930, and was a most gracious partner to Mr. Nininger during his long service on the College's Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the Board from 1959-78. Ruth and Douglas remained married until his death in 1990.
The Alumni gymnasium was renamed Nininger Hall in their honor. A scholarship for music students which is supported by the Niningers awards tuition assistance to as many as twelve students yearly. Ruth was a member of the Central Church of the Brethren in Roanoke, and was very active in garden clubs and served as a judge at flower shows, both locally and in surrounding states. She loved to travel and enjoyed numerous trips to Europe and Alaska.
Ruth is preceded in death by her sisters, Maizie M. Kennedy, Mattie M. Michael, Pearle MacPhail, Margie Miller and Mary Elizabeth Davis; and by her brothers, Lewis V. Miller and Norlyn D. Miller. She is survived by nieces and nephews.
