William S. Hallberg
These are the life runes of William S. Hallberg to whom death came so suddenly on Sunday, Nov 23, 1941:
William Swenson Hallberg was born in Bosjökloster parish, Malmöhus län, Sweden, on March 1, 1872. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in this parish and here he spent his early youth and attended the common school. The parish derives its name from the estate of the same name where in the middle ages was located the richest and best known convent of the Benedictine order in all of Scania. It had a very picturesque location on a peninsula in the beautiful lake 'Ringsjön.' When he attained his majority in 1893, William emigrated to America, coming directly to Kandiyohi, and in this community he spent the remainder of his life, except two years spent at Aitkin and Minneapolis. First beginning to work as a farm hand, he finally vested his savings in farm land north of the village where he developed a fine estate. In later years he turned the management of his farm over to his sons, and built a modern residence for himself and wife across the road from the old homestead where he enjoyed the last years of his life.
He was an efficient and progressive farmer and was always ready to assist in public undertakings and help build up the community.
In the year 1901 he was united in marriage to Miss Alma Peterson, who survives him with four children --- the sons, Harry Hallberg and Roy Hallberg of Kandiyohi and William Hallberg of Lynden, Washington; and the daughter Nora, at the home near Kandiyohi. There are six grandchildren. Other survivors of his family are two brothers --- Swan Hallberg of Graceville and Nels Hallberg of Owatonna; also a sister, Mrs. A. M. Olson, of Chipman, Alberta, Canada; and two cousins, Frank and John Jepson of Winthrop.
Soon after his arrival from Sweden, he became affiliated with the Tripolis Lutheran church, but in 1913 he transferred his membership to Ebenezer church in the village, where he remained a faithful member until his death. On the morning of his death he attended services as usual and seemed in good health. Late in the afternoon at his home north of the village, he suffered an attack of heart trouble which caused his sudden departure from this life. The news of his death was a shock to the community and many friends elsewhere. He attained the age of 69 years, 8 months, and 23 days.
The memorial services were held in the afternoon of Friday, Nov. 28. Arriving from home, the cortege came to the Ebenezer church, which was too small to room the many friends who had come to pay their respects to the memory of their good friend and neighbor. Rev. H. G. Berg, the pastor, conducted the service and made a fine address. Avocal solo, ''Det Brister en Sträng Här nere,´´ was rendered by Mrs. Harry Anderson; another, ''All the Way My Saviour Leads Me,´´ was sung by Mr. Clarence Johnson; and a trio was sung by Mrs. Else Hawkinson, Mrs. A. E. Hawkinson and Mr. J. V. Holmberg, ''Om jag egde allt men icke Jesus.´´ There were many flowers and offerings to the missions given to his memory.
The pallbearers were the three sons --- Roy, Harry, and William Hallberg, Victor Bloomquist, Edwin Lisecki and Waldo Shosten. The interment took place at the Ebenezer Lutheran cemetery north of the village, which is laid out on a part of the land taken from the farm of the departed. The late November sun of a fine day lighted up the scene as the casket was committed to the resting place.
As the pastor well said, ''The deceased was blest with a cheerful and sunny disposition, was a loving husband and father, and a sincere friend and neighbor. He will be sincerely missed.´´
Those in attendance from a distance were; Mr. Swan Hallberg, Mr. and Mrs. William Holts and son, and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Holts, all of Graceville; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hansen and daughter, Mrs. Frank Loffhagen, Mrs. August Ostlund, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Plumley, Dr. and Mrs. L. M. Jones and son; and Ethel Hallberg, all of Minneapolis; John and Frank Jepson of Winthrop; Mr. and Mrs. William Noteboom of Lynden, Washington; Mr. George Peterson and Mrs. Walter Larson of DeGraff.
