Smith, Services To Be Held Tuesday----Funeral services for George Lee Smith, 43, who met accidental death in a train accident here at 1:45 a.m. Saturday, will be conducted Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home where the body is remaining. Dr. Claude Cooper of the First Methodist Church will be in charge with burial in Greenwood cemetery. The son of Dillard and Laura Howerington Smith, he was born Dec. 26, 1906 in Mexico, Mo., and had resided here for the past 25 years. He married Bertha Lyons in November, 1925. Mr. Smith was a member of the Eagles lodge. Surviving are one son, Russel L. Smith, with the U.S. Army at San Antonio, Tex.; five daughters, Mrs. Robert Hill of Mt. Pleasant; Dorothy Smith of Burlington; Laura Smith of Mt. Pleasant; Carolyn Smith of Quincy, Ill; Bonnie Smith of Hannibal, Mo.; two brothers, Fred Dixon of Hannibal, Mo., and William Luke Dixon of Muscatine; three sisters, Mrs. Harold Aery of Jacksonville, Ill., Mrs. Herschel Stonbaugh of Hannibal, Mo., and Mrs. Samuel Lee of Cypress, Calif., and his mother, Mrs. Laura Barr, of Hannibal, Mo. Two grandchildren Kathleen Rose Hill of Mt. Pleasant and Russel Smith, Jr. of San Antonio, Tex., also survive. His father, his wife, nine brothers and sisters preceded him in death.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Local Man Hit, Killed By Freight---The badly mutilated body of a man identified as George Lee Smith, 43, of route 3, was found along the Rock Island Lines right-of-way just east of Cypress street about 8:15 a.m. today The man had apparently been walking along the right-of-way when he was struck by a west bound freight train. His home on route 3 is about three-quarters of a mile east of where the body was discovered. Members of the crew of freight train No. 93 saw the body along the tracks shortly after 8 a.m. today and they waved a signal to Jake Schell, who lives near Smith. He walked up the tracks and found the body, notifying police. The man had apparently been struck about 35 or 40 feet east of where the body came to rest, it was indicated by marks along the tracks. He suffered a crushed skull, numerous lacerations and the fracture of arm and leg bones. his wrist watch had stopped at 1:45. Schell said the man's wife had died about a year ago and that since then he had lived alone. Police and Coronor C.P. Phillips, were attempting to get in touch with children of the accident victim this morning. One son is believed to be in the army and a married daughter said to reside at Mt. Pleasant. The body was taken to the George M. Wittich Funeral Home. First identification was made by papers in the man's billfold which showed a receipt from the Fraternal Order of Eagles for 1949 and other papers. His birth date was shown as Dec 28, 1906.
