Clarence Lynn Abel was born 19 April 1920 in Philadelphia, Penn to Clarence H Abel and Pauline Burlett Abel. They were living in the crowded boarding home of his mother, Ella Grace Barnard and her second husband James Barnard.
The father, Clarence H Abel, apparently went to California to get a job with Luther Burbank. when his wife became distraught, she left baby Clarence on a doorstep and disappeared. Clarence was turned over to the Child Protective Service at the Philadelphia City Hospital. When Ella Grace his grandmother heard that there was an abandoned baby at the city Hospital she took his birth certificate with his foot print and went to the Hospital. This identification led her to become custodian of the child while his parents were away.
When his father died of blood poisoning on the mob, there was a legacy of insurance through the Federal Government. either 10,000 or 1,000 dollar insurance. Whatever the amount, it was a lot of money for that day.
Clarence went on to graduate high school at Haddon Heights New Jersay where he played violin. In seeking a pianist to accompany him in playing music, he met Dorothy May Barnett.
They were engaged to be married in December 1941. They were married on her birthday Aug 9, 1942. WWI had begun and Clarence enlisted in the Navy. A son Paul Lynn Abel was born October 6 1943. Clarence had training in Washington state and was shipped into the Pacific Ocean. He was stationed off the coast of Japan ready for invasion when the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He took part in the cleanup
and was finally able to return to his family in 1945. A second son David Lynn Abel was born December 27, 1946.
