William was born in Lancaster, New Hampshire in 1823, he was a mechanic by trade. He married and had three children:
John born in 1849 who died in 1855, a daughter Lavania or Lorana born 1851, and a daughter Emma born 1862.

Mr. Allen enlisted with Company A, New Hampshire 10th Infantry on August 8th, 1862. He "fell" at the Battle of Fort Monroe Virginia on July 6, 1863. Fortress Monroe was another battle like Cold Harbor, Va where many Union forces died, it is unlikely that he is actually buried in the Valley Cemetery. Both of these battles were on the way to Richmond and the deaths were heavy on the Union side.

His wife, Ann Leavitt Young Squires, is buried in this lot.
