The Weekly Butte Record, Saturday, August 24, 1878, pg 2 col 5: Deaths. O'Ferrall – In Chico, August 20, R.H. O'Ferrall, aged 48 years.

** Date of newspaper is not always the date of the incident - this was a weekly, and stories were written, set, and the printing was done after the facts were typeset, often days later.

The Weekly Butte Record, Saturday, August 24, 1878, pg 3 col 1 (continued): A man of good business qualifications, industrious, ambitious and unselfish. If he did not accomplish all that was within the scope of his aspirations, it may be due to his social feelings, which combined all within their scope and drift. He was a pioneer of Chico. He saw it grow to its present dimensions and importance, and was always its firm, unflinching and devoted friend. He always took an active part in politics, and his services were indispensable to his party. He served one term as Assessor. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and father. Everybody who knew the genial, whole-souled R.H. O'Ferrall will join us in saying farewell to a friend, and invoking rest and peace to his departed spirit. Mr. O'Ferrall was about 48 years of age, was born in Morgan county, Virginia, and emigrated to this State in 1853. After a brief residence in Marysville he came to Chico, where he has since made his home. May he rest in peace.
