Came here from Virginia and for some time worked on farm near Chatham.
Burcham - Levi J. Burcham died at the home of his son, Charles Burcham, one mile west of Mechanicsburg, at 5:30 o’clock Saturday evening, Jan 12, 1907, after a lingering illness.
He was born in Virginia Aug 9, 1830, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Burcham. He first moved with his parents to Ohio and afterwards to Indiana and from there to Illinois in the year 1849, and settled near Chatham, where he first worked for Noah Mason, a farmer near that city. He afterwards went to Missouri in 1851 and on Oct. 25, 1853, he united in marriage to Miss Lydia F. McCorkle, who was the daughter of Archibald and Nancy McCorkle, formerly of Kentucky. After his marriage he followed farming in that country. Two children were born to him and his wife in Missouri, Charles, whose birth occurred in Clinton County, and Nancy Z., who was born in Guilford, Nodaway County.
In 1862 Levi Burcham returned to Illinois as first locating on his father’s farm near Curran, but in 1863 he took up his abode in what is now Lanesville Township where he carried on agricultural pursuits until his removal to Copper Township, where he purchased land upon which he made his home until going to Mechanicsburg in August, 1903. He has been a successful farmer and at one time was the owner of 500 acres of valuable land, but has been very generous in his gifts to his children so that his holdings were not so great at the time of his death. He served as justice of the peace of Cooper Township for 20 years and is one of the leading and influential citizens of his locality. He was also interested at the time of his death in the Mechanicsburg Coal Company which was incorporated in May 1905.
He is survived by his wife, Lydia Burcham; one son, Charles of Mechanicsburg; one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Z. Townsend of Cooper Township, one brother, Elijah Burcham of Lanesville, one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Lee of Gardenia, Cal., eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
