Martha is one of nine children of Henry and Mary Neiland, immigrants from Mecklenbury, Germany.

Martha married William M. Hoffman on November 2, 1873 in Luzerne, Iowa.

To this union three daughters were born, Ida, Mary and Carrie. Her obituary states that she lived with her "daughter" Mrs. (Wilma) C. C. Lindley at the time of her death but Wilma was actually a granddaughter raised by Martha and William.

Martha was a homemaker. The family moved from Luzerne, Iowa to Pipestone, Minnesota in 1892. In April, 1911 Martha and William moved to Wenatchee, Washington, where William died in 1922.

After William died, Martha moved to Hood River, Oregon to live with her granddaughter, Mrs. Wilma (C.C.) Lindley.
