Warren Clinton Gilbert, one of five children born to Joseph Franklin Gilbert (1837-1885) and Alzina N. Mabb Gilbert (1840-1929), spent his early life in Nebraska, later moving to Minnesota, where he met and married his wife, Ida Hoffman on May 1, 1899 in Pipestone. Drawn to Wenatchee, Washington on the promise of "a good job", Waren moved Ida and their children around 1912. The "good job" never materialized, resulting in hard times for the family. Warren worked in the orchards for the old Wenatchee Produce Company for a number of years.
Known as W.C., he was remembered by his grandchildren as a story teller and prankster. One grandson recalls a story about W.C. hunting buffalo all day and skinning them out at night for robes. Truth, or another one of W.C.'s tall tales?
W.C. was lost after his wife Ida died in 1935. He did remarry in 1941, but the relationship was remembered as not being pleasant and he separated from his second wife in September of 1949.
W.C. did a lot of walking. A week before he died he walked the two miles to his son Warren's house for a visit. He was known to walk to town nearly every day to play checkers and visit with friends in the local pool hall.
