Born to William and Martha (Neiland) Hoffman in Luzerne, Iowa as Ida Elizabeth, she was christened in Luzerne, Iowa as Ida Maria Elizabeth. The family moved to Pipestone, Minnesota when she was 18 years old. She married Warren Gilbert on May 1, 1899 in Pipestone, Minnesota.

Ida died at a local hospital in Wenatchee, Washington after a short illness.

She had lived in the Wenatchee area for 22 years after moving from Pipestone, Minnesota with her family in the early 1900s. The family moved from Minnesota to Washington with the promise of a "good job" for her husband, Warren Gilbert, but the job did not pan out, making for hard times for the family.

Descendants remember Ida as "a wonderful person who was very nice, very happy, and busy all the time. She was a good cook, did lots of sewing and handwork and enjoyed crochet."

Ida was survived by her six children:
