He was born Sept. 8, 1938, in Sewickley, and was the son of the late Frederick J. and Christine (Rote) McMillen. He graduated from Sewickley High School in 1957, where he excelled in track and field and won five gold medals. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1963, and served on the USS Elokomin. After he completed his tour of duty with the Navy, he attended the Commercial Trade Institute where he studied electronics.
He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid reader of U.S. history. He worked for Homestead Industries until 1978 when the company was sold to Olsen Technology in Allentown, where he continued to work until he retired in 2000.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joanne; two daughters, Amy Banko of Pennsylvania and Suzanne McMillen of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Joshua, Robert and Timothy Banko, Justin and Megan King.
He was laid to rest in his hometown of Sewickley.
