Young George was a member of the 24 New York Regiment, and was 17 years old when he died.
There is little or no information to be found on his military status, the exception is in a listing of Manchester Men Soldiers and Sailors of the Civil War 1861-1866. This is where it states George W A Thayer, 24 New York Regiment "died"
City Point, Virginia served as Headquarters for General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army during the seige of Petersburg in 1864 and 1865. The Union Army built two huge military installations, a supply depot and a Depot Field Hospital. General Grant's headquarters, Appomattox Manor, is part of the National Park Service Petersburg National Battlefield.
This writer has tried several avenues to try and locate more information and cannot explain why Young George enlisted in New York rather than New Hampshire. The only thought is that his father didn't want him enlisting at such a young age.
