William Henry Carter was born in Manchester, NH in 1843 and was a mechanic by trade, he was the son of Moody and Angeline Carter.

He enlisted for service in the American Civil War 10 Feb 1861 at the age of 18, and died at Salisbury, North Carolina. Salisbury, NC home of the infamous Salisbury Prison. This prison housed it first prisoners in December 1861, it was designed to hold 2,000 prisoners, however would eventually house 10,000 by November 1864. Food and medicine were scarce as was shelter and clothing to protect the Union Troops. It was a most unusual winter in the south with cold, rain and snow. Record keeping was at a minimum due to understaffing and lack of caring on the part of the Confederate guards.

The estimate is that 11,700 Union Soldiers are buried in 18 trenches 240 feet long, many of the deaths going unrecorded. A memorial now stands at the end of each trench.

Private Carter served proudly with Company A, New Hampshire 3rd Infantry. He is in an unknown grave in Salisbury, NC but his name stands proudly in the family lot in the Valley Cemetery, Manchester, NH
