Born Sept. 26, 1921, at the family ranch in Milligan Canyon to the late Herman Earl and Hattie Onno (White) Thompson. Freda was raised in Milligan Canyon near Cardwell and attended school at Eureka School in Milligan Canyon, Willow Creek and Three Forks schools. After graduating, she worked on the Dunbar Ranch, where she met and married Floyd Schmitt on Oct. 6, 1940 in Livingston. Together they ranched in Milligan Canyon and then purchased a ranch near Three Forks in 1947. In 1958, they purchased another ranch near Clarkston. They resided near Three Forks on their ranch until Floyd's death in 1993, and she until her passing.
Freda attended the Last Chance Chapel in Helena and the Three Forks United Methodist Church. She and her lady friends would gather and play pinochle cards. She enjoyed a good morning walk at her ranch and loved to travel and also enjoyed staying home at the ranch. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge #74 of Three Forks, where she was admitted in 1956 and served as grand noble in 1964.
Freda is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Arlene and Jim Bouley of Helena, Madeline and Doug Engelking of Helena, Irene and Tim Steffen of Vandalia, Mich., sons and daughters-in-law, Leo and Pat of Hudson, Iowa, Dewey and Sandra of Three Forks, and Leonard and Linda of Corvallis, Ore. Eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive. Also surviving are sisters Eunice Raffety of Willow Creek and Velma Knowles of Three Forks.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Floyd, a daughter Frances Schmitt and brother Keith Thompson, sisters Tamsy Davis and Eula Hersey.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the K&L Mortuary in Three Forks with the Reverends Lyle Hamilton and John Cathcart co-officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Green Cemetery in Willow Creek. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.
