JOEL J SCOTT

Joel Joseph Scott, son of Joel B. Scott and Evelyn "Eva" Marshall Scott, was born on March 4, 1894. Joel grew up on the Scott farm near Hardeman, MO, and graduated from Hardeman Grade School. After high school he attended Chillicothe Business College and for a short time worked for the United States Post Office, but devoted most of his life to farming. He was very interested in growing fruit trees and always had peaches, apples, cherries, damson and other plum trees bearing fruit during the sum¬mer. Joel studied Spenserian handwriting at Chillicothe Business College and continued prac¬ticing it throughout his life.
On April 29, 1926, Joel married Mary Anna Hutcherson, daughter of Edwin M. Hutcherson and Mary "Mamie" Hume Hutcherson. They were married at the Hutcherson home by Rev. Love, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Marshall, MO. On their honeymoon they drove to St. Louis, MO, where they purchased furniture for their new home.

Mary was born on April 3, 1905, and lived her early life on the Hutcher¬son farm near Shackelford, MO. Mary graduated from Sunnyside Grade School, Mar¬shall High School and attended Mis¬souri Valley College for two years before her marriage. She also taught at a ru¬ral grade school near Napton for two
years before marrying. While teaching, she boarded with the Thorp family. Reportedly, Joel and Mary met when Joel bought the teacher's box at her school's pie supper.

Mary and Joel set up housekeeping at what was known as the Amsbury House on the Scott farm, and lived there for nearly three years. In the spring of 1929, they purchased the Bob Marshall farm, three miles east and one mile south of Marshall Junction, MO. Mary and Joel suffered all of the hardships of rural America during the 1930s on that farm, but managed to keep their family together.

Joel died of cancer at Saint Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, MO, on May 13, 1943. After his death Mary sold the farm and moved with her family to Marshall, MO. In the late fall of 1943, Mary was asked to take a teaching job in the grade school at Arrow Rock, MO. Thus she resumed her teaching career in the rural Saline County schools. She graduated from Missouri Valley College with a de¬gree in elementary education in 1950. She then moved to Sweet Springs, MO, where she taught in the elementary school until her retirement. Mary died on Feb. 6, 1973. Mary and Joel are buried on the Scott family lot in Ridge Park cemetery in Marshall, MO.
