Decatur County Journal

The following concerning the death of MRS. CALVIN STANLEY, sister of HENRY PITMAN, of Leon, and her husband, appeared in the Horton, Kansas, Headlight-Commercial issue of August l7:

A very unusual occurrence took place in Horton this afternoon, when MR. and MRS. CALVIN STANLEY were laid to rest with one funeral service. It is a peculiar
coincidence that they expressed the wish many times that they might die together. They had been married 63 years and were a fine old couple, much devoted to one another. MR. STANLEY had been ill for only a few days and died August l4. MRS. STANLEY's illness was of a year's duration and she died August l6, two days after MR. STANLEY's death.
MR. STANLEY was born in Hendrix County, Indiana, January l2, l832, and at the time of his death was 84 years, 7 months and 2 days old. MRS. STANLEY was before her marriage, MISS MARY E. PITMAN. She was born in Fulton County, Illinois, March 27, l837, and was 79 years, 4 months and 9 days old.

They were married November l7, l853. For a time they lived in Iowa and came to Kansas thirty years ago. They lived in Horton for twelve years. Both were members of the Baptist Church. MR. and MRS. STANLEY were the parents of six children, two of whom are dead. Those surviving are: J.C. STANLEY, Atchison, Kans., HENRY STANLEY, Loveland, Colo., T.P. STANLEY and MRS. F.G. MILLER, of Horton.

MR. STANLEY was a member of Co. E. 7th Missouri Cavalry during the Civil War. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.H. Hubbard at the Baptist Church this afternoon and the interment made in the Horton Cemetery.
