He completed his undergraduate studies at Muskingum College and continued his studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He received his ThD from Princeton Theological Seminary.
Dr. Montgomery served as a Navy chaplain in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
He served as pastor of the Scarborough Presbyterian Church outside of New York City before moving to Princeton in 1956, where he served as chaplain for the university.
In 1972, Dr. Montgomery joined the faculty of John Jay College, a part of the City University of New York, as professor of philosphy. He also served as department chairman at John Jay College for several years.
Dr. Montgomery was also one of the founders of the American Summer Institutes, a program of religious studies overseas. He conducted siminars in Scotland, Italy and Switzerland.
