Lowell Reed Nelson, Chief Warrant Officer; US Army Ret., 67, of Dayton, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services were June 4, 2003 with graveside services at the National Cemetery in Houston.

Lowell was born January 1, 1936, in Colchester, IL, son of Russell and Myrtle Reed Nelson. A former resident of Houston, he resided in the Dayton area for the past 15 years.

Honors: He was the youngest appointed Chief Warrant Officer for the US Army, retired after 20 years of service, served in Vietnam, received many decorations including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart; obtained his Associate Degree in Business Management during his service, and was noted as an honorary Green Beret.

Employment: He was the former owner/operator and instructor at the Huachuca Flying Service, was a truck driver for Dynegy of Mt. Belvieu for 15 years.

Memberships: American Legion Post #521 and the Nolan D. Pickett VFW Post #5621.

Interests: Playing the steel guitar, the accordion, working in the yard and on the computer.

Family: Wife of 22 years, Nadine Beck Nelson of Dayton. Daughters: Susan Woosley of Topeka, KS, Janet Newquist of Topeka, KS, Diana Nelson Reynolds of Atlanta, GA, Penny Nelson Snow of Atchison, KS, Maxine Nelson of Sierra Vista, AZ and Yvonne Byler and husband William of Oklahoma City, OK, Dina Tanner and husband Michael of Dayton, Tonja Nelson of Germany. Son: Dan Clark and wife C.C. of Macomb, IL. Brothers: Leroy Nelson and wife Agnes of Jackson, TN and Jim Nelson of Rock Island, IL.
