In the book, "The Pariss Sims Family and Related Families 1765-1965," the author and son of M.J. Sims remembers him: "Papa was a small man in stature, full of energy and a born optimist, but his health was not good. He suffered all his life from a back injury, caused by a mule falling on him in his youth. He was a Sunday School teacher and a leader and deacon. He was a Republican and his faith convictions and interest in progressive ideas were strong.....He was keenly interested in improved farm and livestock producing methods, being one of the First Demonstration Farms in corn production in Lawrence Co....He never lost interest in the affairs of the world; keeping informed by reading, listening to the radio, and talking with family and friends until his death at 84, from a heart attack. While he often did not feel well, he rarely spent a day in bed."

M.J. Sims is remembered in his obituary as, "Mr. Sims was a member of a pioneer family of Wayne and Lawrence counties. He has been living in Fountain City since his retirement. He had been a member of the Baptist Chrurch for more than 50 years and was also a Sunday School teacher and deacon......The sixtieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Sims was observed last Oct., 7 in a quiet way at the family home."

He married Camilla Ellender Davis on 7 Oct 1891. Their children were:
- Almon James
- Mergie Eleanor
- Raymon
- Wibur Shields (died during a flu epidemic)
- Veron Wakefield
