United States Navy Admiral, Mexican Vera Cruz Medal of Honor Recipient. An 1875 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, he rose to the rank of Admiral, and served as the commander of the United States Navy Atlantic Fleet from 1915 to 1916. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the operations against Vera Cruz, Mexico on April 21 and 22, 1914. His citation reads "Under fire, Rear Adm. Fletcher was eminent and conspicuous in the performance of his duties; was senior officer present at Vera Cruz, and the landing and the operations of the landing force were carried out under his orders and directions". His Medal was awarded to him on December 4, 1915. The lead ship in the United States Navy World War II-era "Fletcher"-class destroyers was named in his honor (DD-445). 175 "Fletcher"-class vessels were commissioned during the war.
