Killed as a POW at the Malmedy Massacre.

Rappahannock Times, 15 FEB 1945, p. 1, and 22 FEB 1945, p 1 (photo), and 15 MA 1945, p. 5 for memorial. Mrs. Ada Collier, of Loretto, Va, received word on February 3 that her son John D. Collier, T-Fifth Grade, U.S. Army was killed in action in Belgium on December 17, 1944. John left for Camp Lee on January 20, 1943 and from there was sent to Camp Gruber, Okla. for training. He was then sent to Louisiana for 3 months after which he returned to Oklahoma where he remained until being sent overseas in August. Collier was a well-known citizen of the county and was loved by all who knew him. Prior to entering the armed services he was employed by a railroad company in Maryland.
