Miles Allin Leatherwood (March 7, 1820 – June 28, 1875) served as Hays County Sheriff from October 1865 - June 1866. He traveled from Burke County, North Carolina to Hays County, Texas over this life time (through Tennessee and Alabama). His father Aquilla Sherrill Leatherwood was a Methodist minister. Sheriff Leatherwood traveled west with his three brothers - Jesse Robertson Leatherwood (Van Zant County, Texas) and William Parks Leatherwood (Kaufman County, Texas). All three fought for the Confederacy. Another brother - James Reynolds Leatherwood moved to Arkansas and fought with the 1st Arkansas - a union regiment. Sheriff Leatherwood was a rancher and farmer (dairy farmer) prior to serving as sheriff. Sheriff Leatherwood died of strychnine poisoning in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas; the death was ruled a suicide.
