William Newton Murphy, 61, a deputy city sergeant of Norfolk for two and a half years, died Sunday at 2:30 a.m. at his home, 2409 Lafayette Avenue, after a lingering illness.
The son of John J. and Mrs. Lula Lane Murphy, who survive him, he was a native of Princess Anne County and had lived in Norfolk 45 years. He was a member of the Charity Methodist Church in Princess Anne County.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Virginia Murphy; a son, Sherman Lee Murphy, of Norfolk; seven sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Moore and Mrs. Frances Brickhouse, of Norfolk, Mrs. Rose Romeo and Mrs. Elsie Atwood, of Washington, D.C. and Mrs. Mary Garrett, Mrs. Emma(Edna) Whitehurst and Mrs. Norma Styron, of Princess Anne County; two brothers, Welton Murphy, of Princess Anne County and Vernon B. Murphy, of Laurel Springs, N.J. and a grandson, Vernon Lee Murphy of Norfolk.
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk, by the Rev. R.I. Williams, of the Fairmount Park Methodist Church. Burial will be in Riverview(Riverside) Cemetery.
