Tharal was born to Toral and Berthe Lund in Norway. He married Christine Amunsen, a second cousin to Roald Amundsen. They emigrated in 1876 to the USA, eventually settling in Puget Sound on the Kitsap Peninsula. Their six children grew up in Port Orchard (formerly called Sidney) in Kitsap County.
